Dr Eileen Culloty discusses digital sovereignty, disinformation and election integrity at Cyber Security Summit 2026

FuJo's Deputy Director Dr Eileen Culloty joined a panel at Business Post Cyber Security Summit 2026 in Dublin on 29 September. The event brought together industry leaders and experts to explore cyber threats, resilience, AI and regulation.

Host Elaine Burke illustrated the confusion surrounding disinformation by asking the audience if they knew the difference between disinformation and misinformation. Most did not.

The panel, Defending Democracy in the Digital Age: Digital Sovereignty, Cybersecurity and Election Integrity, discussed how nations can strengthen digital sovereignty, safeguard critical infrastructure, and protect the integrity of elections in an increasingly complex threat landscape.

In her remarks, Dr Culloty highlighted the democratic need for stakeholders working on disinformation and election integrity to use plain language and transparent methodologies. Our work needs to be understood, questioned and open to scrutiny if we are to build trust and strengthen democratic resilience.

As digital threats become increasingly complex, communicating clearly about them is more important than ever.

Eileen Culloty is an Associate Professor in the School of Communications where she is Deputy Director of the DCU Institute for Media, Democracy, and Society and chair of the BA in Communication Studies.
