About

DCU FuJo is a research institute focused on the digital transformation of media, democracy, and society. We investigate how to counter digital harms, how to enhance public participation, and how to secure the future of high-quality news. Working with national and international partners, we participate in a wide range of projects including Horizon Europe and Erasmus.

Our work is divided into five research strands:

  • Democracy: Led by Prof. Jane Suiter, this strand explores how we can rebuild trust and connection within democratic systems while navigating a complex and evolving information environment, especially in the age of AI and intensifying global challenges.
  • Information Integrity: Led by Dr Eileen Culloty, this strand researches practical tools for cultivating media literacy, strengthening the role of public-interest media, and developing effective responses to manipulation and disinformation.
  • Journalism and the News Industry: Led by Dr Alessio Cornia, this strand examines how shifts in media business models, news consumption patterns, and power dynamics in the media environment reshape journalistic norms, editorial practices, and public trust in news.
  • Political & Cultural Discourse: Led by Dr Iker Erdocia, this strand examines the evolving dynamics of political communication, media framing and cultural expression across traditional and digital platforms.
  • Artifcial Intelligence: Led by Dr Dónal Mulligan, this strand examines how AI-driven tools and platforms transform media production and distribution, audience engagement, and democratic participation
