For-Benefit or For-Profit?

In Journalism Practice, Eugenia Siapera and Lambrini Papadopoulou critique the current emphasis on entrepreneurial journalism and assess cooperative journalism as a more socially valuable alternative. Through analysis of journalism cooperatives in Greece, the authors argue that cooperatives prioritise social benefit over profit and, as such, result in journalism that is more organically linked with society. “A cooperative model is firmly oriented towards social benefit, relies on, and reinvests in, society, thereby adding more value to journalism. From this point of view, cooperative journalism constitutes an attractive future for a journalism that wishes to re-establish its social role and its position in the Commons.” Read the full article.
