Noel Curran has been appointed director general of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the world’s leading alliance of public service media.
Mr Curran is a former Director General of RTÉ, Ireland's public broadcaster. He stepped down from the role last year having led RTÉ through the 2008 financial crisis. He previously held numerous positions within RTÉ including Executive Producer of Live Entertainment, Managing Director of Television, and Editor of Current Affairs.
A graduate of DCU, Mr Curran is a member of the FuJo advisory board and an adjunct professor of journalism in the School of Communications. In 2011, he delivered the inaugural lecture in DCU's "Media and the Public" series. Last year, he returned to DCU to deliver a FuJo lecture on the future of public service broadcasting.
FuJo's director Dr Jane Suiter said, "Noel is ideally placed to address the challenges facing public service media. He has repeatedly shown a nuanced understanding of the highly complex public broadcasting environment where longstanding issues of funding, politics, and public trust must be negotiated in the context of radical digital change."
In reference to his new appointment Noel Curran said, "the EBU represents some of the finest media organisations, content-makers and journalists in the world. The position of DG is a huge honour, and I will work with the membership to seize every opportunity and to move ahead with the changes necessary to secure the future of public service media"
Mr Curran will take up the new EBU role in September.
