About
Neil O’Boyle is an Associate Professor in the School of Communications and a Research Fellow at DCU’s Anti-Bullying Centre. He has led a number of Irish and European-funded research projects on topics such as immigrant political integration in Ireland and diversity in European media. In recent years, his research has focused on the cultural and communicative dimensions of sport. He is co-author of Sport, the Media, and Ireland (Cork University Press, 2020), a landmark text examining the interrelations of sport, media, and national identity. His work critically examines sport as a site in which broader social dynamics are enacted and contested, with particular attention to processes of inclusion and exclusion, and the formation and negotiation of identities. His most recent publications address issues such as bullying in sport, fan performances and representations, the challenges facing sports journalists, and discriminatory language practices in men’s sport.
